This and Rasanyaganam's book are among the best I've read on Afghanistan. He has survival of Afghanistan book knowledge, excellent research. It may be a little boring as a first book on Afghanistan, probably better to read Rasanayaganam's book first, this is too detailed/5.
Afghanistan is clearly a difficult place to win a military war. We hear on the news about efforts being made to promote democracy and improve the future lives of the Afghani people.
