This and Rasanyaganam's book are among the best I've read on Afghanistan. He has survival of Afghanistan book knowledge, excellent research. It may be a little boring as a first book on Afghanistan, probably better to read Rasanayaganam's book first, this is too detailed/5.

Afghanistan is clearly a difficult place to win a military war. We hear on the news about efforts being made to promote democracy and improve the future lives of the Afghani people. This book gives a unique insight into how difficult this will also be. The author is a civilian experienced in confict resolution work who lived in the British /5(6).

This is an important book. The story she tells is powerful and moving. It brings war to the home front. It tells the story of heroic soldiers and medical personnel/5(21). The book looks at the role of the CIA’s role in Afghanistan, and explains how Osama bin Laden rose to power and why the Taliban has not yet been defeated.
